DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN
In May 2004, The Women in Business Club launched a
media awareness campaign, as well as a fundraising
venture, in order to support the victims of domestic
violence.
Despite efforts from both the United Nations and
Amnesty International to urge the Spanish Government
to take drastic steps to curb the domestic violence
against women – the persecution continues.
The Women in Business Club, founded in the Costa
Blanca region of Spain, mixes professional business
networking and relationship building with
anti-domestic violence media campaigning and
fundraising events in support of women and
children's shelters.
It is a club that reaches out into the business
community for support and has never accepted "no"
for an answer.
It is a club that has challenged the outdated gender
stereotyping surrounding women and it has pressed
forward to prove, time and time again, that women
are successful business innovators and leaders with
big humanitarian hearts.
The WIBC hosts two special days to honour women -
International Women's Day for the elimination of
Violence Against Women - a global day celebrating
the economic,
political and social achievements of women past,
present and future, and White Ribbon Day, The
Global, United Nations Theme - Women and men united
to end violence against women and girls.
These are days to shine and be proud to be a woman
and to extend a handful of humanity to help other
women.
Every year, by hosting International Women's Day and
White Ribbon Day, the WIBC reinforce the values of
womanhood by sharing their unique skills and talents
with the public and with each other.
WIBC members benefit by networking their social
contacts in order to built relationships needed in
business and life.
The main areas of their mandate are as follows:
PREVENTION: By launching year-round media campaigns,
the WIBC brings much needed attention to the
atrocities of domestic violence. The largest
campaign operates in collaboration with
International Women’s Day on March 8. This is a
women’s solidarity event that is celebrated all over
the world. White Ribbon Day, November 25, is a
global day marking the unification for the end of
domestic violence.
The WIBC utilise these important day’s – not only to
raise awareness about women’s human rights – but to
raise monies in support of the victims of domestic
violence.
ATTENTION: The WIBC work in close association with
the Costa Blanca’s regional protection shelters,
where defenseless women and their children are often
forced to take refuge. The club also provides advice
to women on how to use the local police services,
which are all trained to handle domestic violence
cases.
REHABILITATION: By fund raising on a regular basis,
the WIBC has its own reserve bank account in order
to handle emergency funding requests, often
associated with the integration and rehabilitation
of victims. The women trapped in a circle of ill
fortune, benefit both financially and emotionally –
knowing that there are other women willing to help
bring about a change of circumstance.
Signs of
domestic abuse are fairly easy to spot.
If you know someone who may be subjected to domestic
abuse, encourage them to get help now. Here are five
common signs of domestic abuse:
CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT HIM
Victims of abuse often feel they can’t live without
their abuser. In many cases, women become dependent
on their abuser. This is usually because of the lack
of self-esteem.
WALKING ON EGGSHELLS
Women in abusive relationships often feel that they
are walking on eggshells around their partner. They
constantly worry about what they say or do, for fear
their partner will become angry towards them.
ISOLATION
Abusers always isolate their victims from friends
and especially from family. They don’t want their
victim to feel safe by being able to turn to anyone
for help. The isolation also enables the abuser to
hold total control over his victim.
SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH ME
Victims of domestic violence feel like something
must be wrong with them. Often times the abuser
forces his victim to commit sexual acts that she
doesn’t want to participate in. Battered women
wonder why they can’t do anything right to please
their partner.
BELIEVE JEALOUSY EQUALS LOVE
A common sign of domestic abuse is jealousy. The
abuser doesn’t want his partner to speak with or
form relationships with other men and women. This
jealousy usually leads to the isolation of the
victim from her friends. The victim of abuse
frequently defends their partner’s jealousy and
confuses it with love.
