Minutes for meeting Monday 18th September, Grand Café, Javea

Meeting Chairperson – Mary Lucas

At the AGM it was agreed we would have a “revolving chairperson” for each meeting, giving everyone the opportunity to chair a meeting.

Volunteers will be asked for at the meetings, but it is intended that eventually everyone will have the opportunity. Janet Brownrigg will chair the next meeting at Calpe, followed by Elaine Barclay then Marcia Vaughn.

Welcome to New Members

Member’s Introduction

This is the opportunity for members, both new and old, to introduce themselves to the group, promote their businesses and hand out business cards. 24 members presented their information.

All members are reminded that they should be wearing name badges clearly stating their name, business name and WIBC office (if applicable).

Networking Session & Product Display Table

Members had the chance to display their business materials and products on a table as they came in and this is the chance to promote them to fellow members.

Please make sure you take them with you at the end of the session!

Re-registering on the website

Karla Darocas, Director,  asked that ALL members take a few minutes to re-register on the new WIBC website – if you have any problems please contact Karla. This is a much more professional- looking website and has better security to members - only pages.

REPORTS

1)   Candy Wright reported on the next fundraiser-

WIBC Auction at El Cid, Benidoleig 20th October 2006

Please sort through your belongings and ask your friends, family and neighbours for anything that is likely to raise money at our auction.  Gift vouchers can also be donated and these often raise the biggest amounts of money. No discount- only vouchers please

Drop-off points are arranged – please see www.wibc-spain.com for details.

Please try and attend the auction as it is a great networking opportunity for you and your business – Friday afternoon from 1pm.

2) Sue Coley reported on the commencement of the-

 HELPLINE project.

Together with Bobby Frost they are aiming to achieve obtaining a 900 freecall telephone number, and train volunteer members of wibc  to take calls on mobile phones from victims of domestic violence who cannot speak Spanish.

The training will be in Alicante, but it is not known whether or not we will have to pay for it. The volunteers will be taught the standard protocol of procedure when answering the calls for assistance from women, children or men.

Various people and companies have been contacted.

Needed- sponsors to pay for the helpline, calls per month paid , a minimum of two mobile phones, a budget for advertising across Spain and a training / operator budget  

Europa have offered to help. As has Dan Chadwick, British Vice Consul of Madrid, who is presently looking after the British Consul in Alicante. Also an offer from Madrid is being investigated.

3) Val Reeve reported on the-

 Fundraising Committee ( Val Reeve , Lizzie  Clayton, Lesley Ellis)

At the AGM in July, she reported that over 10,000 Euros was in wibc account.

They have had a meeting to resolve the issues of requests that wibc receive regarding funding for various projects, shelters, emergency money etc.

A decision has been made re guidelines-

(If the funding request cannot be met by social services) 

a)   Application forms can be given for details only of victims of domestic violence-women, children and men.

b)   A ceiling of 1,000 Euros for each application.

c)    Larger projects to be considered by all wibc members

d)   The fund raising committee cannot be responsible for use of funds by other agencies that are incorrect.

e)   Each month a report will be given to Javea & Calpe Meetings.

f)     Application forms can be received from any of the fundraising committee-all forms must be completed fully.

g)   All information received is confidential.

A request was received from Denia Womens Council for funds for a washing machine and tumble dryer at a day care centre. This has been rejected due to it not being within the remit for victims of domestic violence.

A request of 150 Euros for the cost of books for a child ( in a shelter)for school was agreed and paid.

4) Suzanna Mace reported on-

Health & Beauty Fundraiser- November 17th -11 am till late.

Venue obtained at no cost in order to fundraise - Restaurant Pederamarla II, Nr Benitachell.

(Half way along the winding road from Teulada to Benitachell.)

This has a room ideal for therapists, and two large areas where members may erect their stands.

Any stand allowed to do with Health & beauty e.g. jewellery.

Personal & Business Development.

Part of the new structure of the meetings is a 15/20 minute education talk, either by the meeting’s chairperson or a guest speaker. It is the responsibility of the chairperson to arrange this for their meeting.

Public Speaking

A questionnaire was handed round re how you feel before and during a public speech. Mary gave advice on how to overcome various difficulties and be a good speaker.
