CAVA
- We have contacts with 2- 3 Producers in Valencia area and will also have
some wines available for those not partial to Cava. There will be a Cash Bar
open all evening in hotel. ARTISTS-
Ten artists have come forward to date - all various talents, A
SILENT AUCTION of The Artworks will take place thoughout the evening - Susanna
Mefford from Denia Shelter – asking for your help Susanna
is an American who has been brought up in Spain and is therefore fluent in
Spanish and Valenciano as well as English. She also teaches History and
informed us that 25th April was an auspicious day for this
meeting as it was on this day that the Valencian people lost their rights
and their laws etc. were abolished and the town of Xativa was burned. She
stated that the fight against violence is a fight for rights – firstly the
right to live! There
is a collaboration between Alicante, Valencia and Castellon to provide a
service for victims of domestic violence. The police, social services and
Judicial departments all work together as a team. The women (and their
children) who are in need of a refuge are removed from the immediate area
and taken to Alicante. But there is never enough space in Alicante! The
small 3 bedroom apartment in Denia is meant as a half-way point between a
shelter and the women gaining independence. The women will stay here for a
period of approximately 6 months to a year and receive counseling,
retraining etc. during their stay. It is not yet operational as all the
structural work has to be finished before they can apply for the permits to
make it legal. Any
fundraising money goes towards the running costs of the apartment and
support staff wages, but there are also specific requirements which we can
help with. Susanna
can provide a meeting place for any Denia fundraising group and also a venue
for fundraisers. She
would also like a representative from our group to be a representative on
the council that debates women’s issues. Candy
Wright volunteered to spearhead a group to get things moving in the Denia
area and liaise with Susanna. If you are in the Denia area and would like to
volunteer for this group and help in fundraisers etc. please contact Candy
on TEL: 00 34 96 642 5713
EMAIL: kellykats_sl@hotmail.com Split
into groups for Member Introduction & Suggestions Session: We
split into 3 groups for member introductions (including new members) and a
time to promote our businesses, hand out business cards and network with
each other! It was agreed by all that this was a valuable time and more
networking time was asked for within the meeting framework – as long as
the agenda allows for it! Within
our groups we discussed suggestions for WIBC meetings, fundraisers etc. This
is a summary of points raised: Area
fundraising groups to be formed (at the moment Javea, and now Denia, and
Calpe is coming together too), but still supported by all members from other
areas. Funds
raised could go to different area shelters on a rotational basis, or where
the need is greatest. With
regards to supporting the Denia Shelter, would it be worth holding back some
money in readiness for the opening or setting aside the proceeds from the
next fund raiser (not the Parador one) for them? A
page on the website for member’s to give details of other clubs,
societies, theatre groups, etc. they belong to for other members to join or
to attend their events. Bonus
Bags – bags were to be provided free of charge by a sponsor for the next
event, but it works out very expensive for members to produce 200 fliers or
business cards to go in them. An alternative suggestion was a sheet of
coupons, or a booklet, where participating members paid a small fee towards
photocopying and collating costs. Also suggested was a member’s table for
cards and fliers (been there, done that – not sure how it would work now
with so many new members since IWD!). More
members without full-time employment but with computer and admin skills
could help with new members details, reports for the website, typing minutes
etc. Any
volunteers?!?! It
was asked if it was correct that Zapatero has announced that all
Ayuntamientos are to supply a "safe house" in their area. Does
anybody know anything about this? More
WIBC groups should be formed in all towns. This way each group could work
alongside that particular town hall. This is the long term plan once the
WIBC is registered as an Association and the "blue print /
handbook" was finished. These things are in hand. Members
would like more "socials," not only for the social aspect but also
for networking. Members can use
the “Notice This” on the website to invite other members for informal
social get-togethers. Members
were not happy that “Notice This” insertions had made their way to the
newspaper without their consent and giving out personal details. However it
was realised that it hadn’t been done maliciously. All thought a double
layer would work - one for general use and OK for the newspaper the other
only for members, or a way of “flagging” messages for WIBC only. A
novel fundraising idea was a “talent auction – the idea
of using peoples skills and offering them for auction. Even using your
partner’s skills. These don’t necessarily have to be your work skills
and can even be washing the car, mowing the lawn, baking a cake. Back
to main group for New Member’s Introduction
The
group leaders introduced the new members who were in their group today -
She
is also giving a meal for 2 as a raffle prize for the next fundraiser.
AOB Warning
to members - There is a Dutch guy hanging around the A6E department at Denia
hospital offering his services as a translator. He is NOT an official
translator, but a Funeral Director touting for business!! If you need a
translator at the Hospital ask at the main desk for Denia HELP – who can
be paged and provide this service free of charge. Candy
Wright is directing her first play for the Careline Theatre and is asking
for your support – more details to follow in “Notice This”. 4pm
