MEETING MINUTES
Minutes for meeting Monday 20th June, Hotel Marriott, Denia Report on meeting today with Ana
Vasbinder - Karla We now have receipts
for the money that has been donated to the Town Hall and have a better idea
as to where it has gone. We will not be able
to use La Mesquida any longer because it is to be reformed into a Day Care
Centre for children whose Mother’s need to be at work and have no other
child care. Instead we will be
able to use the Social Services Centre in the Market Square, which will be
the new Women’s Education Centre, and the computers will be installed
there by the end of September. Karla encourages
members to think of which courses they will be able to offer. Interpreters are
badly needed to assist women in
trouble that doesn’t speak Spanish. There is occasionally
an interpreter available on the emergency number when a woman rings for
assistance, BUT not always. There can also be a
need for interpreters during the legal and medical processes. Ana would like a list
of WIBC members who can act as interpreters. They will be paid by the Town Hall. Can any members who can offer their services as interpreters for Spanish to any other language please contact Lesley at Lesley@villa-finders.com in order to set up a directory. Report from Candy Wright re Association
of Women meeting in Denia Candy reported that
it was all very proper – even the minutes were delivered by hand and had
to be signed for! She showed us
Booklets about Domestic Violence (Violencia de Géners) and these are going
to be translated into English, German and maybe Russian. They are rethinking
the Denia Shelter to be more open because there are problems with staffing
and the team of professionals cannot be on hand all the time. The Monitored
Exchange Centre, a place where the children are handed over from one parent
to the other under supervision is currently in Valencia which is a long way
for many people to go so they are planning for the Centre to be in Denia
which will be more convenient. The Denia Feria of Associations was a good day out and not only promoted
the WIBC (especially with our posh new banners) but also promoted the
businesses of the ladies who were present. Many thanks to all volunteers. Candy has been
promised information about a supply of Pins for WIBC against domestic
violence but it has not been forthcoming, so if anyone can help with
contacts please tell her. The Ladies from
‘Help of Denia’ offer voluntary translators in Denia Hospital.
They also have a supply of Electric Beds, wheelchairs etc., Forthcoming Fundraising events SARA HAMER from El
Cid Leisure Oasis reported on the Sponsored Slim with Weight watchers which
will begin on Wednesday of this week and asked for more volunteers other
than just her and Candy. WIBC AUCTION SEPTEMBER 30TH. Sara also outlined
the details of this Fundraising event, which will take place at El Cid. They
hold a charity auction every six weeks and there are usually between 90 and
120 people in the audience. We need to donate
around 250 items from between 5 and 50 euros in value. Books, videos,
kitchen equipment etc. can be put into bundles to count as one “lot”. Computers, fax
machines, answer machines and second hand clothes will not be accepted. Goods will be
delivered to organised pick up points. We will notify you of these nearer
the time, but start searching those cupboards now! Business gift
vouchers can also be auctioned, with many thanks. There is plenty of
room for Lunch before hand if desired. Report on Cava, Canapés & Art
Evening - Katilena & Jeanine € 2,136 were raised
in just three hours! This is by far the
largest amount raised by a single fundraiser (not including IWD), so
congratulations to the team. Sponsors had been
found to pay for the Canapés, The Euro Weekly having donated the most at
around 500 euros. Two bodegas and a
solicitor donated the cava. It had been agreed
with the Artists that 30% of anything sold was to be donated to WIBC, not
complete paintings. Although some of the artists did donate their paintings
for the event and some afterwards. The subject of why
there wasn’t a raffle was brought up and Katilena and Jeannine said it had
been a conscious decision not to have one, as they didn’t think it met the
intended ambience of the evening. A suggestion for
another time was to write one’s name on a €? note and the ones pulled
out would be the winners of the prizes. Treasurer’s
Report – Mary To date we have
donated 8,000 Euros to Jávea town hall to assist victims of domestic
violence in Jávea. The first 2,000 was
used for basic bills in the refuge - water & electricity. The second 3,000 has
been spent on the lawyer from the Women's Council. The Valencian Community
only covers her salary for a three-day week. Before our donation, she worked
the extra two days (sometimes three) without pay. Because of WIBC
fund-raising, she can be paid for a full week. Not all members were
happy that we were paying for things like electricity and lawyers bills as
they feel either the local town hall or the government should meet these
costs. If the members agree,
our next donation could be the basis for an emergency fund, with a separate
bank account. Carmina, the psychiatrist would be able to sign cheques, with
Elaine Barclay and Mary. It can happen that there is an immediate need
for the woman and children to get out of the family home until the court
case has been heard. The refuge cannot always take them in. If this happens,
the Valencian Community will only cover the cost of a hotel when the victims
are legally in Spain. If full papers are not available, assistance cannot go
through the Town Hall, and that's where the emergency fund comes in. We voted on the idea
of the emergency fund and although the majority agreed it was by no means
unanimous. We are open to any
suggestions for the best ways to use the money we raise, so would members
please let any of us on the committee know any suggestions or concerns you
have. Our contact details are at the end of these minutes. Report on meeting with Ana Vasbinder,
Suzanna & Mary - Lesley Suzanna & Mary met with Ana Vasbinder
on Monday 30th May to give her our official cheque for 3,000 Euros and
get a receipt. As proof that we are now being taken
seriously as an organisation, Ana suggested that WIBC produce a business
guide. The Town Hall will subsidise it and work with us on
distribution. We were shown a copy of a really neat little glossy one
currently produced to promote Jávea. There would have to be a certain cost to
members who want to advertise in it. We think it's a good idea and should be
done to promote members' businesses. And keep our profile high! Ana will also introduce us to her
opposite number on Calpe council, so that we can start to support the
setting up of a shelter in this area. WIBC scrapbook - Katilena Katilena is making a
great job of the scrapbook of Networking Events, which she is compiling to
show potential Sponsors. Any Other
Business Emergency Fund Conflict Valerie is a member
of Jávea Civic Society and voiced her concerns regarding an article in
their newssheet alluding that a business women’s group‘s donations were
not reaching their goal at Jávea Town Hall and an alternative Emergency
Fund had been set up by Amanda Dean (another Jávea counsellor). We don’t know if
this is fact or rumour or an internal power struggle within the town hall.
This is being investigated and will be reported back to our members. This is why we want
to set up a joint bank account with the staff for the shelter, because we
will be signing the cheques and will have control over where the money is
going! Insurance for Therapists Ingrid reported that
she is still looking into Insurance for Therapists but has so far not come
up with anything. Trisha Essery has
been in touch with her English Insurance Company who will offer year round
Spanish cover if a large enough group of Therapists are interested. Beach Party Sue Coley usually
organises one every year and will do so if people are interested. This
received a very positive response. Introduction of New Members to the group We would like to welcome 8 new members to the meeting: Mavis Wilkinson and
her Right Hand Lady helper, Joy Goodwig are from HELP of Denia and run the
Help charity shop in La Xara. Beverley Sinclair is
a beautician and runs Sanctuary Beauty Rooms in Jávea Silvia Calles
Oliveros, originally from Mexico now living in Moraira is planning to import
very beautiful swimwear. She is also a translator for Spanish, Portuguese,
Dutch and some French. Sofia Ruiz Santamaria,
from Calpe, is Spanish and is the Manager of the Bancaja in Benitachell. Sarah from Jávea is ‘The Book People’ in this area
and can offer books at a 1/3 of shop price Julie Powell from Jávea/La Sella is a qualified Therapist, an
ex-teacher and retails Sculptures.
Jeanine Honour from
Pego is a Secretary and has also been a Prison Officer dealing with both the
abusive and the abused. Her and her husband also market satellite systems
and salt water systems for swimming pools. Christine Newton from
Sierra Bernia is a chiropractor, holistic therapist and psychotherapist. Networking Due to the items brought up re the allocation of donations to the Jávea
Town Hall and subsequent discussions, we didn’t have time to break into
networking groups. Therefore we are suggesting that the next two meetings (Calpe and Denia)
are purely networking and social, so bring your business cards and fliers
and see how many new people you can meet! Guests very welcome. Next meetings: 100%
