DON’T  BELIEVE  THE  E-HYPE!

How often do you get an email prompting you to advertise your business on a website?

First of all, if you did not subscribe to that website to receive their emails, then you have been Spammed, which by European law is considered unlawful solicitation and is subject to a huge fine, However, if you decide to read it and see what they have to offer, you can do so at your own risk.

After you take a look around the website, you might consider placing an advertising banner or link option. But first – you must ask some very important questions to see if your money will be spent with wisdom.

  1. What is the hits and visitor ratio of the website?
  2. Where can you see the website’s statistics profile?
  3. What is the website’s subscription base?
  4. What is the website’s target market profile?
  5. What is the website’s traffic saturation?
  6. What is the name of the website’s developer?

If the website that is soliciting you for advertising cannot answer all of these questions – then forget it!

The hits and visitor ratio gives you a look at how well the website is functioning out there in the big World Wide Web. Most websites I have seen in Spain are not calibrated to draw in a dead fish, let alone a substantial amount of eyeballs needed to make your marketing money pay off.

Confident websites will happily show you a link that will take you to their statistics programme, which profiles all of their website’s details. In the profile you will be able to see for yourself, all of their visitors per day, month and year. You will be able to see what countries they come from and what time they surf the site to gain their information. You will be able to see also, what parts of the website are drawing the most visitors.

Progressive website have an “inhouse” subscription-base of users who have logged onto their site for some reason. Perhaps they have become members in order to receive a free newsletter or some other option that is emailed directly to them. In other words, these websites have subscribers who want to interact with them and that is good for you and your company: hence, their subscribers become your future clients.

Focused websites know who is their target market and they know what type of information to showcase in order to please their market share. The content of the website will clearly demonstrate their niche with well-written articles and other free information to drag in the clients. If their market profile is not going to suit your clients, then advertising on that website is not for you.

Performance websites will have done their due diligence and they will have a super good ranking in all the search engines. An easy way to check a website’s ranking is to visit http://alexa.com  and type in the name of the website.

Asking about their website developer is good practice as well. A good website developer has been in the Internet business for some time and hence has a portfolio of websites to showcase. Unfortunately, this business has a giant amount of conmen who take advantage of your naivety about the Internet. They can sell you a load of crap if you don’t watch out. The easiest way to know if a website developer is reliable is to simply type their full name into any search engine. If they are genuine, then their name will come up all over the web. A good developer leaves their trademark on many things from websites to billboards to forums. Face it – you wouldn’t hire someone if you didn’t research their past work experience in the real world… so why should it be any different in the Internet business?
