APRIL 12TH
- 2005 Report by Karla Darocas Our day started with coffee at the El Paso bar on the outskirts of Javea. One of our members, Sue Armitage (Interior Solutions) arrived first and found herself to be the only woman in a bar full of men. Oh, well - could be worse? Our tour was guided by Eugenia Bolufer, who is one of the psychologists at the Javea Women's Shelter as well as being the administrator - Carmina Izquierdo (second psychologist) and Amparo Alemany (Social Worker to the Shelter). Because the Shelter and the Workshop Centre are under the same Social Services department, these women are working for both programmes. After the tour, the ideas for workshops were flying between members. A timetable will be drafted by Suzanna Mace (Events Co-Ordinator) for when the WIBC members can host workshops at the Mesquida.
ROUNDABOUT CHARITY SHOP - PRESENTATION At 1:30 we headed up to the Roundabout Charity Shop in Javea town. We were welcomed with snacks and glasses of wine by - Irene Balylock (President), Marion Hodge (VP) and Hilary Cosgrove (Committee).
Ana Vasbinder from Javea townhall was on hand to met with the ladies of the Roundabout Charity Shop who kindly donated 2000 euros worth of computer equipment to the Women's Workshop Centre. Also at the event were the administration team of the Shelter - Eugenia Bolufer (psychologist) Carmina Izquierdo (psychologist) and Amparo Alemany (Social Worker to the Shelter). At 2:00 the computers arrived from the Great British Computer Shop and more photos were taken. Marion Hodge (VP) thanked all her volunteers who work at the Roundabout Charity shop. It was due to their efforts that the money was raised to buy the computers for the Javea Workshop Centre (Mesquida). Carmina Izquierdo, on behalf of the Javea townhall, thanked the Roundabout Charity Shop for all their hard work and for buying the computers. She also thanked the WIBC. It was big heart-warming day out!
WHAT
GOES ROUND – COMES ROUND!!! The
Roundabout Charity Shop of Javea donates 2,000 Euros worth of computer
equipment to the Javea Women’s Workshop Centre (La Mesquida) The
goodwill effects of International Women’s Day are still being felt in the
Javea area. In what can only be described as circular circumstances, the
philosophy of one good turn deserves another is at the root of this
heart-warming story. It
was near the beginning of December 2004 when Hilary Cosgrove of the
Roundabout Charity shop first contacted Suzanna Mace of the Women in
Business Club - after hearing all about the club’s fundraising and media
campaigns. After a brief conversation with Suz Mace, Hilary Cosgrove was
turned over to Mary Lucas, the treasurer of the WIBC to talk about the
Roundabout Charity Shop making a financial donation to the cause. Mary
Lucas and Mary Bremner (WIBC member) went together to explain to Hilary how
the WIBC works in tandem with the Javea town hall – and its prime concerns
are to keep the doors open on the Javea Women’s Shelter and the Women’s
Workshop Centre (La Mesquida). It was also brought to her attention that the
Women’s Workshop Centre was in need of new computers. The
Roundabout Charity Shop held their annual general meeting on March 8th
(International Women’s Day) and collectively they all decided to spend
their 2,000 Euro donation on the purchase of new computers for the Mesquita.
After their meeting, three of their committee members came down to the
International Women’s Day event and announced to Suz Mace of their
decision, of which Suz was proud to announce from the stage to the entire
International Woman’s Day audience. As
fate would have it, Andrew Simms, owner of the Great British Computer
Shop in Javea Port had donated a complete computer set to the International
Women’s Day as the Grand Door Prize. His sponsorship and involvement in the event, made him the
prime candidate to receive the donation and purchase the computers on behalf
of the Roundabout Charity Shop. Now
that the circle has been completed, the presentation of the computers will
take place on April 12th, at 1:30pm – at the Roundabout Charity
Shop in Javea. In attendance will be Ana Vasbinder, who will be accepting
the computers on behalf of the Women’s Workshop Centre as well as the
members of the Roundabout Charity Shop, the Women in Business Club and –
of course – Andrew Simms of the Great British Computer Shop. CONTACTS
