EMERGENCY
FUND NEEDED BY JAVEA WOMEN'S SHELTER Report by Nicole Smolders April 06 Last Monday I have had a meeting at the Centro Social, along with Ana Vasbinder, with social worker Amparo, related to the shelter in Javea. Amparo told me in a nutshell (as Ana already went through the whole procedure during our last meeting in Toscamar) about the working procedure, the people involved, future plans and projects. She also expressed her appreciation re the WIBC support. As you know, there is a workshop in Javea and the actual shelter is in Pedreguer. The townhall supports (financially) the workshop, i.e. materials needed etc. Amparo explained that the new law (that the denounced violent partner has to leave the house) makes it possible for victims, to stay in their house rather than to go to the shelter, so their children could stay at the same school etc. However, for many women this means being responsible for rent, electricity bills etc all of the sudden, without perhaps having a job just yet. The shelter doesn't receive any financial support for this problem and obviously any help on this front is welcome. The shelter can provide copies of the bills without the woman's private details. Perhaps we could discuss this with the ladies this coming Monday at our next meeting. We also discussed the 24 hrs helpline, and Ana seems very keen to set up a line with various languages spoken.
